Teaching College Kids is A Trip

Teaching college kids is a trip! I mean, really, especially P.E. as in physical, that's PHYSICAL education. Do YOU know of any current college age kids that you have been around in the last 24 hours or the last month, for that matter, that is EXCITED and enthused about exercise, of any fashion - IN THE MORNING??? Yes, that's what I do, I wake up, pull on my leotards and teach them five days a week at 8:00 or 9:00 a.m. every morning. And it is FUN, because I am almost 50 years old, and they gripe, mutter and say things behind my back as I run them, drill them and conjole them into "I know, let's do the stadium stairs again today!" Just the look on those faces . . . Don't get me wrong - those who are not able to physically for any reason - and oh they find 'em - are not required to do it! But the SECRET of motivation is in the COMPETITION, and sometimes just downright SHAME of it all! These kids and some non-traditional aged students don't want to be outdone by anybody, least of all a 50-year-old aerobics instructor. So, they whine, and they roll their eyes, and then, especially the males, outrun the livin' daylights out of me. And I love it. They take their own trip - way beyond from "I just can't do it" all the way to "I can't believe I did that!" That makes it all worthwhile, pulling on those leotards, eating Georgia sand gnats, and nursing sore ankles. These college kids are a trip worth taking . . .
